Burnell Smith, 88, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away September 18, 2024, at Mercy House. He was born on May 25, 1936, in New Oxford, Pennsylvania to John and Kathleen (Todt) Smith.
Burnell was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He worked at Thomas Somerville Plumbing and Heating for 38 years. He was a volunteer fireman in Chambersburg.
Burnell was a faithful husband and caregiver to his wife Janet. He was a devoted father and grandfather with a particular love for baseball and grandkids activities. He loved Notre Dame and Eagles football and Oakland Athletics baseball.
Burnell is survived by his daughter Debra Carter of Chambersburg and three grandchildren: Melinda (wife of Casey) Hurst of Chambersburg, John Carter of Chambersburg, PA and Andrew (husband of Amber) Carter of Chambersburg. He has five great-grandchildren: Ella Hurst, Maya Hurst, Carter Hurst, Brooks Carter, and Jameson Carter and siblings Joan Kaiser, Gerald (husband of Anna) Smith, Robert (husband of Joyce) Smith, and Donald (husband of Doreen) Smith. In addition to his parents, Burnell was preceded in death by his wife, Janet F. (Diehl) Smith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, Ltd., Chambersburg, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in Corpus Christi Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave, Chambersburg, or to Mercy House, 730 Norland Ave, Chambersburg.
