Edward N. Herman Obituary

Edward Nels Herman, age 86, of Chambersburg, PA passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 3:30 PM.

He was born on April 24, 1939, in Whitehall, Wisconsin. His first job was at a Twinkie factory. Then, at 18 years old, he joined the United States Army which he proudly served for 27 years; 11 of those years serving overseas. He served in the Vietnam War for two years and was stationed in Hawaii, Africa, Greece and Germany. His wife and daughter were stationed in Germany and Greece with him. In the U.S. he worked in the Pentagon, Site R Fort Richie, and Letterkenny, and in 1984 he retired as an E8 Master Sergeant.

He then worked as a civilian for 14 more years. He worked in Finance and Accounting in Fort Richie, as a payroll clerk, and then worked at the Carlisle Barracks Physical Fitness and Research Institute. In 2004 he retired.

He enjoyed fishing, shooting pool, playing the lottery, animals, nature (especially feeding the birds) and music. MASH, Cheers and Married with Children were some of his favorite shows. Blue was his favorite color, and he wore it a lot! He was a strong and quiet man, his laugh was infectious. He was always there for you. He was everyone’s steady Eddie.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Renate Herman (Schonholz), parents, Robert and Bernice Herman (Jacobson), his brothers Willis Herman and Wallace Herman and his sisters Shirley Mish, Beverley Solberg and Marlene Marsolek.

He is survived by his daughter Karen Herman of Chambersburg (Aaron Greene), his stepson Michael Miller of Norfolk and two grandchildren Christine Miller of Maryland and his beloved Margot Greene of Chambersburg.

These last three years Ed has made friends and connections with the staff and residents at Celebration Villa of Shippensburg and at Menno Haven Village Square. He enjoyed himself at both residences. He particularly liked Fancy Fingers and loved having his nails painted red, white and blue.

If you’d like to donate in Ed’s name his charities of choice are the American Red Cross and The Chambersburg Salvation Army.

Condolences can be mailed to Karen Herman 540 Bender Avenue Chambersburg PA 17201.
