Ernie Bowens, 69, of Shippensburg , Pa , formerly of Frederick, MD, passed away suddenly Monday August 21, 2023 in a motor vehicular accident, in Franklin County Pa.
Ernest Steven Bowens was born June 1, 1954 in Frederick, MD. He is the son of Anna V. and James E. Bowens.
Ernie was a 1972 graduate of Governor Thomas Johnson High School (TJHS) in Frederick, MD. There he excelled in Basketball and Football in the early 1970's.
Known for his "Athleticism, speed, toughness, and quickness, Ernie was the leading scorer in TJHS basketball history for many years". He led the basketball team to the Tri-State League Championship and the State Playoffs in 1970-71 as starting point guard.
In 1971 Ernie led the Thomas Johnson High School Football team to a 10-0 season as quarter back. He was named to the Maryland All Star Team in 1971.
After High School, Ernie attended Bowie State University, and Cheyney State University.
Ernie played Semi-Pro Football for the Frederick Falcons in 1972. " He helped the Falcons go undefeated that season and win the league championship".
Ernie was inducted into the YMCA of Frederick County's Alvin G Quinn Sports Hall of Fame on January 28, 2023.
Ernie's life- long passion was working with the elderly and those who were mentally and or physically challenged. He also enjoyed working with young people as a Life Coach and Motivational Speaker.
Ernie is survived by daughter Elisha Bowens, grandchildren Armani and Mekhi. Son Eric Bowens, wife Jaclyn, grandchildren Gavin, Brandon, and Naomi. His Wife Debbie Bowens, step daughters Jessica, Tina, Valerie, Daphen, and their children. He is also survived by special friend Emily Caviness ; two sisters, Sylvia M. Bowens and family, Shiann Talley and family ; four brothers, James Hicks Bowens and family, William Pete Bowens and family, Gary Lee Bowens and family, David Chicken Bowens and family, Many Aunts, Uncles, nieces, great -nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and cousins.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents James and Anna Bowens. Special aunt Erma Gilmore of Bradenton, Fla, and many other aunts and uncles.
A celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday September 23, 2023 from 1:00 PM- 3:00 PM . Services will be held at the Jackson Chapel United Methodist Church, 5609 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick, MD. 21703.
