Evelyn Kessinger Obituary

Evelyn Ruth Kessinger, 93, passed away on May, 30 2023, at Magnolias Assisted Living in Chambersburg, PA. She was born on August 14, 1929, in Markes, PA to Lloyd Hopkins Kessinger and Rosa Blanche (Atherton) Kessinger. Her father died when she was very young and her mother remarried Fairman Floyd Lytle, who raised Evelyn and her two sisters on a farm in Upton, PA. Evelyn personally confirmed her Christian faith on Easter Sunday on April 25, 1943 at the St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Upton, PA. Evelyn attended Lemasters High School and then helped on the family farm. In 1947, at the age of 17, Evelyn was first employed with the former J. Schoeneman / Stanley Company, a men’s fine garment industry. After years of working on the production lines, combined with many evenings of taking business education courses at the Chambersburg Area Senior High School, she advanced to become the Production Manager for the Chambersburg facility. Evelyn was also selected to help oversee corporate restructuring operations in the Baltimore area. After 47 years of dedicated service, “Evie” retired in 1994. Evelyn cherished her co-workers and became lifelong friends to many. Evelyn funneled her love toward her sisters, nephews and their families. Evelyn touched others by the loving detail and care she put into wrapping Christmas presents, sending beautiful, personalized, handwritten greeting cards, hemming or mending clothing, and cooking a variety of delicious foods that she shared generously. After retirement, Evelyn could be found daily at one of the local Chambersburg diners, where she cherished the servers as part of her extended family.

Evelyn is survived by three nephews, Robert Weir of Northhampton, MA, Randy Weir of Clearfield, PA, and Jeffrey Weir of Chambersburg, PA, and many great, and great-great nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sisters B. Lucile Sleighter and Sarah M. Weir, step-sister Edna Lytle Zeger, and her nephew Dennis F. Sleighter and his spouse Susan.

Grave-side funeral services will be held on June 4, 2023, at St. Thomas Cemetery in St. Thomas, PA. All who knew Evelyn are welcomed to join the procession to the cemetery which will begin at 1:30 pm at the Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home located at 725 Norland Ave. Chambersburg, PA.
