Florence Louise "Floss" (Collier) Sterner Obituary
Florence Louise “Floss” Sterner, née Collier, passed away on July 7, 2026, at age 89. Born December 19, 1936, to Florence L. & William E. Collier in Philadelphia PA, Floss spent her life in service to others. Graduating with honors from Upper Moreland Highschool in 1954, she received a full 3 year scholarship to Abington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Beginning her 40 year nursing career in 1957, she cared for her community at Abington Hospital and later Warminster General.
In 1960, Floss married Donald E. Sterner, starting their lives together, and founding their family with daughters Diane and Kristina. She and Diane moved to Chambersburg in 2007 to live closer to Kristina, husband Tim Sempowski, and her grandchildren Erin (married to Ian Harris) and Saoirse. She made lifelong friends everywhere she lived, hosting game nights for dominos, joining book clubs with her fellow avid readers, and writing letters to all the important people in her life. She was predeceased by her parents, grandparents, her beloved husband Don, her brother Bill, and her daughter Diane. She leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, her daughter Kristina, and her wonderful grandchildren Erin and Saoirse.
Floss made herself integral to every community she was a part of. She was a girl scout leader for 10 years in her neighborhood of Hatboro, and was heavily involved in her local churches, Holy Trinity Lutheran church in Abington, and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chambersburg. She volunteered in every way she could, doing intakes for Meals On Wheels, knitting mittens and hats for a children's home and blankets for shut-ins. At Trinity Lutheran, she and Diane founded The Homeless Connection in 2016, which worked with the Chambersburg Homeless shelter to provide families with furniture and household goods as they transitioned to more stable housing. She helped 92 families before retiring in 2023 due to complications with her health. She touched the lives of everyone she met, and will be remembered by many.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 431 Philadelphia Ave, Chambersburg, PA on Saturday, July 18th, 2026 at 11:00AM. A luncheon will follow.
