Frank L. Newman Obituary

Mr. Frank L. Newman, 87, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Friday, October 7, 2022, at Providence Place Retirement Community, Chambersburg.

 

He and his wife, the late Janet L. (Dice) Newman, were married on May 3, 1958. Janet died on December 28, 2017.

 

Born at Wells Tannery, Pa. on November 27, 1934, he was the son of Carl Vernon and Ruth Schenck Newman. He attended the first two years of elementary school at the Rocky Run one room schoolhouse in Wells Valley. His father died in 1936 when Frank was two years old. As a result of his father’s untimely death, Frank attended the balance of his elementary school and high school years at Girard College in Philadelphia graduating in 1952.

 

After working several years in the Chambersburg area, he enlisted in the Army in January of 1954 and after basic and specialized training spent two years on the island of Okinawa. He was discharged in January of 1957. He returned to the Wells Valley area and then found employment as a salesman for Chambersburg Ford. Following his employment at Chambersburg Ford, he was employed at the Letterkenny Army Depot as an EAM operator followed by transferring to MIDA as a computer operator and to DESCOM where he trained and then worked as a computer programmer and finally a Computer Systems Analyst retiring in December 1989.

 

Frank was a member of the Crider’s United Brethren Church since 1969 where he served as a Sunday School Assistant Teacher, Sunday school Superintendent for 35 years, a member and chairman of the Administrative Board for many years, and a lay delegate to Annual Conference.  He also led the Building Committees responsible for the construction of the current church building and the Family Life building.  

 

Frank was a 55-year member of the Mt. Parnell Lions Club.  He served as former President and was the Club Secretary for many years. He also was a two-time recipient of the Melvin Jones Award.

 

Among his many interests, Frank enjoyed working with wood projects and hunting mainly from the family hunting home in Fulton County.

 

Frank is survived by his two sons, Terry, (wife Terri Lynn) and Michael, (wife Michelle), three grandchildren, Chelsea, (husband Alex Ferkh), and Mackenzie (husband Brandon Whitworth), daughters of Terry and Terri Lynn, a grandson, Jeb, son of Michael and Michelle, a great grandson, Carter Ferkh (son of Chelsea and Alex Ferkh), two sisters, Laura June Martz and Alice Sheeder, two brothers, Ray Newman (wife Ellen) and Rodney Wible (wife Marty).

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Vernon Newman, mother, Ruth Schenck Newman Wible, step-father, Willard Wible, brother, Willis Wible, and an infant brother, Roy.

A Celebration of Frank’s Life will be held at 11:30 AM, Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at Crider’s United Brethren Church, Chambersburg. His son, the Rev. Michael V. Newman will officiate. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The viewing will be 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at the Kelso Cornelius Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
