Harold Brake Obituary

Harold L. Brake, 87, of St. Thomas, Pennsylvania, passed away January 6, 2024, at Menno Haven's Brookview Health Care Center. He was born on April 7, 1936, in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania to Charles E. and Ruth (Hochlander) Brake.

Harold was a 1954 graduate of Mercersburg Academy. He and his wife, Dolores (Kriner) Brake, were married on June 3, 1956. Harold was a lifetime member of the St. Thomas Lutheran Church.

Harold’s proudest accomplishment was expanding his father’s company, Charles E. Brake Company., Inc., an excavating and heavy equipment transportation company. He fulfilled every job from laborer to CEO. Harold and Dolores also founded Hardol Development Company – an owner, developer, and lessor of governmental buildings, convenience stores, and commercial office space. He also founded Multilee, Inc., an environmental company, as well as Brake Concrete, Inc., a commercial real estate holding company for future Brake generations.   

Harold’s peers referred to him as “Mr. Chairman”, having served as Chairman of many organizations including; Charles E. Brake Co., Inc, Brake Concrete, Inc, Bear Valley Water Joint Authority, Chambersburg Area Development Corporation, Multilee, Inc., Associated Paving and Excavating Contractors, Chambersburg Trust Company, and Franklin County Foundation.

He served as a board member on the Franklin County Planning Commission, the St. Thomas Township Board of Auditors, the Chambersburg Hospital Board, and the Pennsylvania Prevailing Wage Appeals Board.

Harold’s favorite pastime was flying his piper airplane and mowing grass with his John Deere’s.

Harold is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dolores, and son, Randall L. Brake. He is also survived by four grandchildren Kyle Brake, Courtney Shreiner, Charles Brake and Aaron Shreiner, and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Rhonda (Brake) Shreiner.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the St. Thomas Lutheran Church with Pastor Matthew Kayhart officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and for one hour prior to the funeral on Friday, both held at the church. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Thomas Lutheran Church Building Fund, 7061 Lincoln Way W, St Thomas, PA 17252, or to the Menno Haven Benevolent Fund, 300 Ridgeview Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
