John Malone Obituary

Chambersburg, PA - John Dudley Malone, 91, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away peacefully at SpiriTrust Lutheran, The Village at Luther Ridge on Thursday morning, March 18, 2021. Born in Chambersburg, he was the youngest of three children of the late Elliott Dudley Malone and Ruth White Malone, née Deardorff. John's family lived in Ft. Loudon where he spent most of his youth. A member of the Class of 1947, John graduated from Lemasters High School. He married his high school sweetheart Joyce Ann Foreman on July 11, 1951, shortly before shipping out to Germany where he served from 1951 to 1953 as a radio operator in the 7th U.S. Army.

Upon his return, John and Joyce settled in the St. Thomas area where they raised a family of three children. John worked for several years as a candy salesman for the Dulebohn Candy Company of Chambersburg before joining the Sherwin Williams Company in 1961 as an outside salesperson. After a few short years, John was promoted to the position of general manager of the Chambersburg store where he finished out his successful career and retired in 1990. John and Joyce continued to live in St. Thomas for many years before moving to a smaller home in Chambersburg in 2013 where they lived until September of 2020.

John and Joyce loved to travel. They traveled across the country numerous times and visited many overseas locations including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Eastern Europe, Great Britain, Ireland, Egypt, Tunisia, and the Holy Lands. They also spent a summer working in one of the Hamilton's general stores in Yellowstone National Park. Wherever they went, whatever they did, John and Joyce always developed lifelong friendships.

One of John and Joyce's favorite pastimes was "antiquing". John enjoyed refinishing the treasures they would find. Their home was decorated from floor to ceiling with their finds. They also shared many beautiful items with their friends and family members. John also enjoyed reading, playing cards with the Sweet 16 Card Club gang, and spending time with his grandchildren.

John and Joyce were faithful members of St. Thomas Lutheran Church where John served in various leadership positions including Church Council President. John was a Charter Member of the St. Thomas Ruritan and served for many years as the club Treasurer. He also served as a St. Thomas Township Auditor for many years. John was a member of the St. Thomas American Legion, the Chambersburg VFW, and George Washington Lodge #143 F&AM.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by two sons: Philip Malone (Sandra), of St. Thomas, and Thad Malone (Sharon), of Carlisle and five grandchildren: Emily Johns, Will Johns, John Malone, Joseph Malone, and Lily Malone, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Ellen Malone Johns (Bill), and two brothers, Paul and Lester Malone.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the St. Thomas Lutheran Church with the Rev. Matthew Kayhart officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 725 Norland Ave. in Chambersburg, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Wednesday.
