John Spencer Smith, 84, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania passed away January 20, 2021 at Chambersburg Hospital. He was born on January 27, 1936 in Artemas, Pennsylvania to Spencer and Margaret (Gardner) Smith. After graduation from Everett High School, he married Mary Katheryn Jay, the love of his life. They just celebrated 65 years of marriage. John retired from the United Telephone Company. John was active in many organizations starting with his sons Boy Scouts and Little League. He attended many high school football, wrestling and soccer games. He was active in the St. Thomas Fire Department and St. Thomas Ruritan. He was a member of the George Washington Masonic Lodge in Chambersburg, Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg, Odd Fellows and Tall Cedars. John and Mary were active members of the St. Thomas United Methodist Church, were avid campers and square dancers with the Penn Dixie Square Campers.
John is survived by his wife, Mary and their two sons: Randy A. (companion Lisa) of St. Thomas and Michael O. (husband of Rosemary) of Chambersburg. John has four grandchildren: Matthew Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, Tanya (wife of Jason) Chmilewki of Hanover, PA, Jamie (wife of Dane) Baumgardner of New Oxford, PA, and Amanda Smith of Marietta, GA, as well as 7 great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted Monday Jan. 25th at 2:00 PM at the Fairview Cemetery, Artemas, PA with the Rev. Scott Sassaman officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made in John's name to the charity of your choice.
