Kenneth Poper Obituary

Kenneth R. Poper, 81, passed away May 25, 2026. He was born February 18, 1945, in Waynesboro, PA, the son of Howard Franklin and Elsie Marie (Zimmerman) Poper.

 

Ken graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School, class of 1964. He worked in inventory control for Amp Inc/Tyco, retiring after more than 30 years. He taught the Silver Sneakers exercise class at Results and Chambersburg Fitness Center. He was a certified personal trainer. 

 

Ken was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Chambersburg where he was involved in Steven’s Ministry. He taught Martha Room Sunday School Class and was in charge of the 4th of July event for many years. He was involved with several prayer groups within the church as well. Ken served as a Chaplain at Altera (Magnolia's) for a number of years. He did daily devotionals, both in the morning and evening.

 

Ken was an avid runner, competing in 5ks, 10ks, half marathons, marathons, biathlons and triathlons. He was a past member of the Chambersburg Road Runners. Ken coached football at Faust Jr High and was affectionately known as Coach Poper by the players, even when he made them do Poper Push-Ups. 

 

Ken loved spending time with his wife. Together they enjoyed many things, especially going to Ocean City. He loved the Baltimore Ravens. He had numerous dogs over the years but his best friend now was his lab, Honey Baby. 

 

Ken is survived by his wife of 43 years, Deborah J. (George) Poper, sister, Jean Elter; several nieces and nephews including, Carrie Ann (David) Miller, Anthony Wayne George, Kevin Elter, and Kelly (Michael) Souders; as well as numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Linda George and special cousins including Tamara George and Mary Mitchell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Larry Poper, Howard Franklin Poper Jr, and John “Jack” Poper, and his beloved dog Sandy. 

 

A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 750 Norland Ave, Chambersburg, PA.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Ken’s Name may be made to St. Jude’s Children's Hospital or to St. Paul's United Methodist Church Food Pantry for dog and cat food.
