Margaretta (Margie) Louise Knoll Young, age 94, passed away on May 8, 2025, into the realms of Heaven to rejoin the many family and friends who have gone on before. She lived the vast majority of her life within a mile of her home on the Fort McCord Road near Chambersburg. Her last days were spent with her son, Mark, in Chambersburg and then with her daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Young Sheaffer (husband, Rick) in New Bloomfield, PA. Margaretta left school in the tenth grade to help care for her new baby twin sisters which began her life-long service of loving and caring for her family, neighbors, and friends.
Born on July 23, 1930, at home in Mt. Rock, PA, Margaretta was the daughter of the late Robert J. Knoll and wife, Mabel R. Keller Knoll. On August 26,1950, she married Myron A.Young who lived on the neighboring farm from the Knoll’s homestead. After retiring from farm life, Bob and Mabel turned over the farm to Myron and Margaretta. There they reared their three wonderful children, Marvin, Mark, and Marjorie along with the various critters including dairy cows, beef cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens, and family pets.
The first job outside the home was to drive school buses for her dad, her brother-in-law, Harry Leisher, her husband, Myron, when he became her boss as owner of Young’s Bus Lines, and lastly for her daughter, Marjorie. She continued to faithfully transport school children whom she loved for decades retiring to provide full time care for her husband. Church activities took up much of her life also. As an accomplished piano player and church organist, Margaretta faithfully accompanied the song leader for every Sunday service, dozens of weddings and funerals from her youth until she could no longer do so in the last few years of her life. Margaretta was a long time member of the Women’s Missionary Group, assisted with Bible Adventure, and helped create duffle bags and dresses for Operation Christmas Child with the women’s sewing group at her church, Salem United Brethren, where she was a life-long member. She enjoyed cooking, (she loved trying new “healthy” recipes, and making her famous zucchini casserole for every event), ironing!!!!, gardening, writing inspirational letters to family and friends, and playing Chinese Checkers. Above all, she loved the Lord, her three children, three grandchildren - Melissa Young Fink, husband Joe; Blair Young, partner Matt Smith; Alex Young, wife Tayla, two great grandchildren: Maximillian Fink and Alder Young, and her last remaining sister, Linda Taylor, husband, Geoff.
In addition to her parents, Margaretta was preceded in death by her husband, Myron A. Young, who passed away on January 19, 2006, her son, Marvin, who died on July 10, 2019, and her sister, Cindy Leisher, August 29, 2024.
