Melvin Burkholder Obituary

Melvin E. Burkholder, 84, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, passed away October 31, 2024, at Chambersburg Hospital. He was born on December 23, 1939, in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania to Clarence and Grace (Flohr) Burkholder.

Being involved with agriculture his entire life, Melvin was a member of Future Farmers of America and the Franklin County Senior Extension organization where he met his wife. During the early years of their marriage, he farmed in the Ft. McCord area.  Melvin began driving truck for Franklin Feed and Supply Company in the late 1970's while still farming for several more years.  Upon becoming disabled in 2002, he loved supporting family and friends with transportation when needed - the perfect reason to sightsee.  For more than 60 years, Melvin was an active member of Criders United Brethren Church as well as the Mt. Parnell Lions Club. He was also a member of the PA Farm Bureau Association and the Pennsylvania Pork Producers Association.  Melvin enjoyed reading, woodworking, puzzles, gospel music, and traveling to be actively involved in the lives of his family.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret (Watson) Burkholder, three children; Susan (wife of Marshall) Stuff, Sherry Culler, Shelly (wife of Ed) Shoemaker, grandchildren; Joshua, Samantha, Adam, Sarah, Austin, Benjamin and Matthew, 10 great-grandchildren, a sister Karen Sloan and sister-in-laws Barbara Burkholder and Dorothy (wife of Chester) Ocker. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers; Roy Burkholder and Gary Burkholder.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Crider’s United Brethren Church, 2380 Loudon Rd, Chambersburg, with Pastor Donald Baker officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, November 8, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM,  as well as one hour prior to the service Saturday, both at the church. Interment will be private at Brechbill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Melvin’s name may be made to Crider’s United Brethren Church or to the Mt. Parnell Lions Club, 7398 Hawk Road, Mercersburg.
