Melvin Rudy Obituary

Melvin George Rudy, 97, passed away March 23, 2017 at Falling Spring Care Center, Chambersburg. Born July 17, 1919 in York, he was the son of the late Clarence Michael and Clara (Gotwalt) Rudy, Sr. He was the husband of 74 years to Helen R. (Sterner) Rudy whom he married April 5, 1942. Melvin, a World War II Veteran, served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star for heroic action in the South Pacific. Upon his Honorable Discharge he returned to the area managing Agway Stores in Carlisle and Chambersburg. He later retired as a Bookkeeper for the Oliver Oil Company, Chambersburg, with over 15 years of service. Melvin was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, where he was a past Sunday School Superintendent, past member of Church Council, and attended the George Hull Bible Class. He was also a past member of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg and the National AARP. In addition to his wife, Melvin is survived by one daughter, Constance "Connie" E. Eckstine of Tampa, FL; one son, Randy M. Rudy and wife, Mary A. of Elkton, MD; four granddaughters, Marie Whelan, Gina Betz, Michelle Harvey and Rebecca Foss; and nine great grandchildren. Melvin was also preceded in death by one brother, Clarence M. Rudy, Jr.; and two sisters, Neta Campbell and Willetta Enders. A celebration of Melvin's life will be held 11 AM, Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Kelso Cornelius Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Rev. Sharon F. Kelly, PhD will officiate. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be sent to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church 431 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA or to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA 17201-8706.
