Paul R. Stockhausen of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 11, 2026, at the age of 85 surrounded by his loving wife and children. Paul lived a full and generous life marked by devotion to family, friends, and his community.
The eldest of the seven children born to Joseph P. and Mary E. Stockhausen, Paul grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, surrounded by siblings Joe, Liz, Ginny, Tom, Anne, and John. This foundation shaped his lifelong appreciation for family and connection. Tennis was central to Paul’s life. His first tennis racquet, which was gifted to him at the age of twelve, changed his life. He played competitively in his younger years and on his college team and then for enjoyment into his late 70’s. He also played baseball and basketball all through high school and was President of his Class. In addition, Paul loved his Steelers!
Paul earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from Duquesne University and later an MPA from the University of Pittsburgh. After college, he joined the Navy as a Navigator, traveling around the world on the USS Enterprise. He enjoyed a successful career beginning with Carnegie Mellon University, Allegheny County, Allegheny General Hospital, and 47 years with MassMutual / MML Investor Services.
Paul is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane Leahy Stockhausen, the love of his life, and his three children: Yvonne B. Miller of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Henry L. Miller (Karen) of Devon, Pennsylvania; and P. David Stockhausen of Ben Lomond, California. He was a proud grandfather to Henry, Boden, Grace, and Ferran, each of whom brought him immense joy. They will always remember his quick wit, one liners, genuine interest in their lives, and most of all, his love.
Early in their marriage, Paul and Jane loved dancing, playing golf and tennis, yearly vacations to Deer Valley YMCA Family Camp, and Friday evening pinochle with family. During retirement, first at Penn National Community and then for the last eight years at Menno Haven, Paul especially enjoyed spending time with Jane, playing cards and board games, going on cruises, and having dinners out with friends and neighbors.
Paul loved people and was a gracious host, always ready to invite friends over or accept each invitation received. He particularly enjoyed his conversations and time spent with the “Irregulars,” a group of guys with whom he had spirited discussions over lunch. First Friday breakfast guys also added camaraderie and fun.
Paul was a fierce advocate for human rights, respect, and decency, spending his time volunteering for the causes that he believed in. He was devoted to helping refugees through the Refugee Resettlement Organization of Chambersburg, pushing patients to and from their treatments at Menno Haven’s rehabilitation center, and attending Black Lives Matter marches, the No Kings March on the Square, and prayer vigils in support of Ukraine. He was not afraid to call out hypocrisy where he saw it and loved to write letters to the editor on political topics.
But mostly, he loved his family. He wanted them to know to “Live well, Janie and family. You are amazing, exemplary, and giving gems. Your many friends in many places prove it. You’re easy to love.”
Paul will be greatly missed; however, his legacy lives on in the family and friends who carry his love and kindness forward. The Funeral will be a private, family ceremony at Trinity Episcopal Church. On Saturday, February 7th at 1:00 p.m., all are welcome to a celebration of his beautiful life at the Menno Haven Life Center, in the Event Center at 300 Ridgeview, Chambersburg, PA 17201. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 58 S Second Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201 or Mercy House, 730 Norland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
