Phillip B. Schaff, 82, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, passed away Monday, October 14, 2024, at Mercy House of Chambersburg. He was born on June 6, 1942, in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, to Jacob G. Schaff III and Ruby (Schetromph) Schaff.
Phil was a lifelong observer of nature and his surroundings; he used a camera to record these observations. As a fuel truck driver for McCleary Oil Co., he spent his days driving the countryside of Franklin County which led to many of these photos. One in particular became a historical project; the Brick-End Barns of Franklin County. Over 100 barns photographed and researched (many of which no longer stand). He gave slideshow talks about the barns, a poster was printed and sold and some of his photos and notes were used in a book - Cumberland Valley Barns, Past and Present - Franklin County Revisited by Dianna Clemens Heim. Most recently Phil was photographing what he called “yard art and other interesting things.” Phil was also a member of the local chapter of the Audubon Society. He was an avid “birder.” He was a member of the Mt Parnell Lions Club. Phil enjoyed watching the Chambersburg Trojans play football and basketball. He loved a good hike in the woods and the long way home.
Phil is survived by his daughter, Heather (wife of Bill) McAreavy of Chambersburg. He has four grandchildren; Carrie (husband Jordan), Cora, Patrick, Brian (wife Laura)and seven great-grandchildren; Pierce, Lucas, Asher, Jager, Joseph, Lincoln and Wyatt; all of Oklahoma. He is also survived by his sister Peg (husband Charlie) Johnson, Chambersburg, sister-in-law Deeanna Schaff, NC.; and many special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by his wife B. Joyce Schaff on May 18, 2020 and brothers Jacob (2012) and George Schaff (2019); sister-in-law Julie (2016); and nephew Jacob “Jud” (2020).
