Shirley Jones Obituary

Shirley Kean Jones, 85, of Chambersburg passed away Saturday, Feb 24, 2024 at Menno Haven Nursing Center.  Born August 7th, 1938 Shirley was the daughter of the late Earl and Mary Kean.

A lifelong resident of Chambersburg, Shirley was a graduate of Chambersburg High class of 1956.  Following graduation, she worked for the Chambersburg Area School District.  She also worked at Synder and Knox accountants and the Valley Bank on Main St, now known as M&T.  She was a past president of the Chambersburg Business and Professional Women’s group and the local AARP chapter.   After her retirement, she was a volunteer for the Capitol Theatre and Menno Haven.  A longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, Shirley served as the church treasurer for many years.  She also enjoyed singing in the choir and served with the Stephen’s ministry. She volunteered at Vacation Bible School and various church meal programs. She was a pianist since her childhood, played the clarinet in the high school band  and participated in the church bell choir.  She insisted her three children learn to play the piano as she felt music was vital to a child's development.  She also welcomed a variety of family pets including cats, dogs, guinea pigs and fish.

Shirley enjoyed many trips to the beach with family.  She also took trips with a group of close friends to Europe  and Alaska.  In addition, she went on church mission trips to the Czech Republic and Honduras.  For many years in the summer,  Shirley went along on church work camps to various impoverished areas in the US (serving as a cook for the adult and teen workers).   She was an avid reader and enjoyed tending her rose garden.

Shirley is survived by her sister Susanne Detrich and her husband James of Chambersburg;  two sons, Bradley and his wife Rosario of Clearwater, FL, and Douglas and his wife Tammy of St. Thomas, PA; daughter Krista and her husband Patrick of Charlottesville, VA.  Also surviving Shirley are 2 nieces and numerous Gabler and Kean cousins. She was the loving grandparent of 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.  Shirley also enjoyed the loving devotion of Alice Chek of Quincy, MA.

The family would like to thank the staff at Menno Haven for their assistance, especially Jody Plasterer and Kim Paylor.
