Walter L. Rosenberry

Rosenberry Walter L. Rosenberry, 91, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2013, at Providence Place of Chambersburg, where he and his wife of 67 years, Mary Grace (Oliver) Rosenberry had recently moved. Walter had suffered from Alzheimer's for a number of years; however, he never lost his sense of humor or charming smile despite the diminished memory. He was born and raised in Ft. Loudon, and graduated from Lemasters High School in 1939. After graduation, Walter worked for his father in the construction and plumbing business and for Perini Construction, the company that built Letterkenny Army Depot. After induction into the Army in October 1942, he attained the rank of staff sergeant while serving with the 83d Infantry Division and participated in the June 1944 D-Day invasion of France. He was wounded on July 16, 1944 in the battle for St.Lo, and after recovering, he was honorably discharged in June 1945. His decorations include the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Returning to Chambersburg, Walter was employed at T.B. Woods Sons Company where he worked for 39 years and retired as the shipping and inventory manager in 1984. Shortly after beginning his employment at T.B. Woods, Walter met the love of his life, Mary Grace, whom he married on March 3, 1946. A devoted husband, father, avid hunter, and expert woodworker, Walter served many years as treasurer of the Scotland United Methodist Church. He also served as a board member for the Boy Scouts at Central Presbyterian Church. More recently, he was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Brethren Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. and Bertha (Appleby) Rosenberry, sisters, Twilla Tarner and Lucille Campbell, and brothers Kenneth, John, and Dean Rosenberry. Walter is survived by his wife, Mary Grace, son, Dennis and wife Denise Rosenberry of San Antonio, TX, his grandson, Scott (Jenn) and great grand children, Jackson and Rachel of Houston, TX, as well as his sisters-in-law Nancy Oliver and Gaynelle Rosenberry, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 725 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, on Thursday, May 9th at 11 a.m. with Rev. Marc Stephenson officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:30 till 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Burial will follow at the Stenger Hill Cemetery, Ft. Loudon. A reception will follow at Mt. Olivet United Brethren Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Walter's memory to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Pennsylvania 3544 N.
